In his brief "Preface" (pp. vii-xiii), he finds the presence of formulas throughout the poem to be the best evidence of its oral character and argues for single authorship. Each entry consists of the word concorded, the line number, a one-line context for each occurrence, and the number of occurrences. Indices of diversification and standard deviation are also provided for statistically significant entries.
